Switch to ETF focused and a few long hold individual stocks. You have been teaching this idea of holding throughout your channel and courses. Remember why you wanted to build financial freedom to begin with - more time to spend with people and on things that matter more for you. Think about it, your one moment is your child's whole life (or at least a massive portion of her life). Means a lot that you can spend more time with kiddo.

As a long term Banker I should point out that it is more difficult to create and extract cushion for losses like we used to in good times. The auditors insist on the Banks demonstrating a fact based rational for provisions. The auditors are trying to ensure the Banks don’t play with provision to “manipulate” earnings.

4:01 you really need to go over the fine print here. You will only achieve the over performance in the combined investment if you rebalance regularly. In the example provided, daily balancing was done (which is quite extreme and expensive) If you simply buy the banks and ETF... And never rebalance... The over performance will never happen. You may then want to talk about human tendancie on how we don't rebalance. (Why invest more in your losers)

First, you should honestly assess your investment success (total returns) the risk you've taken, versus the market index etfs you might own instead. I've actually beat the 3 and 5 year TSX and come close to tieing the S&P. But, I consider my success more luck then skill. I've been gradually migrating to etfs and recently decided to substantially increase my foriegn and bond holdings (basically taking my winnings and leaving the high risk table) and I'm doing it through passive etfs.

Interesting chat. My personal experience was the same as Elder Beavis. (similar age) Started in MFunds because thats all there was at that time. Fast forward to now. I have 2 portfolio's. One managed by a wealth management company, and my personal Questrade accounts. (TFSA, RRSP, taxable). I believe in diversification in investments, so I have some etf's, and stocks. Invested in Canada, USA, and global. Depending on the investment, I decide whether its in my tfsa, rrsp or non reg taxable account. I tend to put my more shorter term risk/reward investments in my taxable account, (to use capital losses if there are any) and my dividend growth investments are in my tfsa and rrsp. It works for me. I've been comparing my managed portfolio to my personal portfolio for the past few years and they are reasonably similar overall due to some good results in my non reg account. If I were just comparing my dividend investments I would be roughly 70% of what my total return has been in my managed portfolio. I am now adding some money to index funds.

I have done both. Earlier I was in to stocks only or stocks majorly. Sometime after 2008 I dipped toes in to ETF for. Gold exposure or market index in very small way. Later I had to clean up portfolio to take profits and clean up losses. The portfolio p/l is not an issue but the bigger issue you cannot be a true long term investor because it's important to take out profits and losses to trim, rebalqnce and fine tune and grow wealth. Buy and forget advice of gurus is a fantasy - event long term investor has to know how to play their cards. When index and sector ETF, REits caught my attention I added them for dividends and steady market returns. Later on dividend etfs, covered call etfs, etc and so on. The problem is so many choices and overlaps with ETFs. I made mistakes, learnt lessons and try to pick a few complimentary ETFs, I sold some stocks to book profits, some at loss and presently its almost equal proportion of stocks and ETFs. My plan is to keep my stocks and grow ETFs in future so I can save time and energy on research and monitoring. Moreover ETFs help me get clarity on future dividends, volatility, know my downside risks, eliminate research work and free up time. The other main advantage is I have good dividend income to reinvest and cash to work with. Earlier with stock only portfolio I always get tired of putting more capital and cash every few weeks or month and waiting long for dividends and one day stock falls and you don't make gains overall. If ETf portfolio falls I can inject cash or leave As Is for future growth and income. This ability to be cool and let portfolio work out itself or put in cash during falls makes it easier and sounds like real investing rather than trying to time markets.

Thanks for covering a topic so central to my own investing strategy. As a hybrid ETF and single stock investor, I live this tension every day. I invest for myself and a number of family members and friends, and for years have combined ETFs to cover the US and international markets, with the exception of being long Apple, while buying individual stocks in Canada. The latter are blue-chip market leaders in their particular categories, and as a basket of stocks, are selected to cover most sectors of the economy with one key stock pick per sector. (I'm weak on materials and energy, but otherwise diversely invested.) This hub and spoke, core and explore strategy seems to work, but every so often I feel a hypocrite for advocating passive investing (using the iShares/RBC ETFs) while also picking stocks. My rationale is that I tend to do better with these stock positions than I can via a TSX 60-style Canadian ETF. The "explore" side of my portfolio, these Canadian picks, are boring and predictable: RY and TD (finance), TRI (data), STN (engineering and design), T (telecom), WCN (waste management), L (consumer staples), and BN (real estate, infrastructure, alternative investments). I'm always keen to learn more about core and explore strategies, wanting to better understand this strategy I've developed rather informally.

Nice to see you both. Life is important, a balance is important. At 60, I would like having grand kids, this is a gift. The the end of a day if I loose or gain 100$, I am happy or sad, but if the amount is 1000$, I would be upset or in the air. So I prefer having it in mutual fund with once a year balancing but I still do stock, I like it.

100% a combo of both , I’m about 65-70-% ETF’s and the rest individual stocks but most those individual ones also pay dividends , like BNS ,ENB and T about 10% of those don’t pay any dividend but those 10% are high risk

Great topic guys - I own 2 sector specific (Hamilton) cover calls - (HMAX / UMAX) one bank stock - the cover calls are structured very well , and offer diversity and great monthly income - the bank stock offers great stability and growing yield - even throughout the worst times… / you might say the best of both worlds - and I consistently compound the income on both of these choices… so far - very satisfied…

Looking at your portfolio on blossom, diversity is obviously important to you. Like you said, keeping up on the number of positions you have is too much (I can relate obviously being at the exact same point in life), so trimming back would likely be good. Concentration in your highest conviction names, then putting the rest in index funds is likely a smart choice. You only need 3-5 individual names to still get all the benefits of individual names, with a huge relief in time requirement. If I were to make the decision to move to index funds or ETFs, I'd likely do a hybrid approach keeping 3-5 positions weighted around 10% each, then the remaining 50% in the index.

ETF’s all the way. I started by transferring all my mutual funds over to my own investment account and took some bad advice (for my situation) and bought some investment stocks on the venture market just before Covid and everything crashed. I am slowly moving everything over to high yield etf’s. moved most of my money over to Wealth Simple with everything on drip. Just watching it grow now. The American etf’s have much higher yields. Defiance and Yieldmax. My husband did the same and his account is bringing in more than my wage. Some people are going to say too risky, but we are doing it to build up our accounts and then go to the consistent paying ETF’s like SVOL. Thank you for your video and Brandon go for the ETFs you won’t regret it with the returns. Also don’t be afraid of the American stocks.

I look more at the tax eligibility and implications of dividends (individual stocks) vs distributions (ETFs). You might not be able to have all your investments in a TFSA and not have to worry about taxes when drawing from those same funds. A lot of people are looking at the here and now of taxes without thought down the road and how those ETF distributions are taxed.

It's great to see you two together again. As for the stock vs ETF debate? My portfolio is all stock and it's managed by a brokerage. The reason I went the brokerage route was because I wanted to leverage the experience of a team. Having access to them via e-mail, phone is very beneficial for me. Now, the fees are expensive so that's where the ETF's come in! Passively managed and set it and forget it kinda thing! However for me to switch over, it means that I have to sell, activate a capital gain tax and deal with that! So it's prohibitive in my situation. And I like asking questions as I'm very hands on. But if you're in your 20's and just starting out? 100% ETF's. Absolutely!

Brandon, you are in the financial field. You live and breathe this stuff every day. If there's anyone who could make a good argument for holding individual stocks, it'd be you. My work has nothing to do with the financial field and I don't have time to research individual companies in depth, so I go with ETFs. My parents earned their wealth through individual stocks because they spend their entire day digesting economic/finance/investment content. I suspect most people who invest in individual stocks don't actually do enough research. My vote for the general public is 100% ETF. For you, I say you can't go wrong either way. You could consider doing a core holding of SP500/Total market and the rest in your high conviction stocks.
